PUMAS TRAVEL TO PILKINGTON

Minutes sliece for Pilks Committee man who had passed away

Pumas first game in National

A huge day saw Peterlee appraised of what is exactly in store for them from now on.  The first round of the NCL saw them travel to St Helens to take on one of the best Rugby Club in the country in Pilkington Recs one of the founder members of the National Comp.

A very young and nervous side travelled not knowing what type of Rugby to expect but this level is all about the skill and organisation not who can bully each other off the ball, there is absolutely no time at all for nonsense.

A well drilled home team quickly started racking up the points and despite a lot of heart and commitment the team work of the Recs always seemed to work.  An incredibly high skill levelled game saw only 2 knock on’s the entire game and Peterlee were starved of possession.  Out of the 6 4 sets in the first half Peterlee did get they did well and showed what they could do scoring their first NCL try through second row Kyle Scott who showed massive commitment to the club travelling from Dewsbury to play.

Turning round 62 6 the pumas got better organised and competed more, outstanding scrambling defence from the back 3 in Dan Alvey, Dan Wilson and 17 year old Boawe Rankin who got man of the match making over 30 tackles.  The Pumas forwards got some go forward through strong efforts from Kyle Scott and Carl Brown but had to spend most of their time defending and the Pumas playmakers, Jack Adamson, Paul Flynn and Zac Mcluskey troubled the defence with the little ball they got.  The players appreciated what the process they need to go through and despite the score enjoyed the rugby, some of the home teams play just had to be appreciated but the Pumas never gave up or took a back ward step.

The club go into this league with eyes wide open, a need to strengthen on the field in key areas such as centre and in the pack, the Young men of Peterlee and surrounding area are called on to take up the game, 2 of the side yesterday were playing their first ever games for example and acquitted themselves well.  There is also the need for sponsorship from local business as well as improving training facility which will all pay dividends but for now the Peterlee Pumas will do it tough and work through a continuous program of improvement in what we call The Greatest Game.

For a first run out in the league you shouldn't really be disappointed at least you got some points on the board and a chance to take a measure of how the league will shape up.
