Pumas u 16s v Gatheshead Storm

IMG 0742The Pumas under 16 season got away to a flier despite the game being delayed starting due to what is a terrible pitch at Gateshead anyway but also was now waterlogged.

Pumas were up and running quickly with an early try in the corner by Ben Armstrong off a strong pass by Halfback Joe Willis converted by Fullback Niall Sidney from roughly 40 yards out. The Storm defence had several reprieves with a period of poor set completion from the Pumas Pack but an inside ball from Joe Willis put Prop Forward Ryan Smith crashing through the home sides defensive line to go under the sticks to score fullback Sidney Converted.

The game became scrappy for a while as Pumas made some interchanges and Gateshead managed to score from shift wide play. Peterlee responded before half time, Ross Brown was put in by Joe Willis who played Ross right in front of a hesitant defence for a well finished try again converted by Niall Sidney .

The second half saw a determined Pumas side really hit home with score from Alex Stephenson on the wing,. The Pumas side had to dig in for the next 10 minutes though the ref deemed Fullback Niall Sidney to be guilty of 'holding' in the tackle, preventing the play-the-ball and Gateshead were able to get some repeat sets but the Pumas defence held firm.

Matt Yews then split the home defence with a fantastic try right hand side of the sticks. Gateshead scored on the counter attack as a Pumas attacking move broke down with a dropped pass. Fullback. Kieron Marr responded well almost immediately afterwards with two dummy passes and a 30 meter run of footwork to score past 4 defenders. Peterlee made it hard for themselves in the final minutes of the game with 2 cautions from the referee through 2 high tackles giving Gateshead repeat sets once gain but again held out with strong defence.

Final Score 32-8. 70% set completion rate needs to be improved but with the Pumas only needing 78 completed tackles spending most of the time in attack gave a luxury of having a lot of ball they may not get in every game.

Man of the Match for his 17 tackles and 3 30-40 yard breaks out of his own red zone goes to Niall Sidney. Well done to the whole squad whom look forward to their next game with increased fervour!
