under 14s away to durham

always destined to be a tough encounter between 2 very good teams and it certainly turned out that way.

Demons started brightly with Bielby and Conley doing good runs and Conley pass set up Hitchens who saw a gap in pumas defence and scored under the posts, Coates converted.

From the restart pumas defended strongly with walker and clark doing good tackles, however on the fifth, a great kick from Coates across the field, caused problems in the pumas defence with cartridge and Brooksbank not dealing with the high ball on the try line and Parkes came through to score and again Coates converted 12-0.

Pumas woke up after that and started coming back into the game, Marr, Norman and Bestford gained some ground and from Kitching quick pass found the on running Coxon who powered over, Drinkwater converted 12-6.

Pumas really started to get going and another great powerful run from Coxon gained pumas 50 meters, quick play from Marr set up Drinkwater to power over. 12-10.

A knock on from Brown gave Demons a scrum and they took advantage with Belsey and Wells doing some great runs and they set up Walton to power over for a try on his debut. Coates con 18-10.

Demons from the restart gained some great yards with Beilby, coates Walton. Some great tackling from Norman and Jackson were keeping them out but demons weren’t to be denined and Walton weaved his way throughthe defence to get his second try, coates converted 24-10.

Pumas got right back in the game thanks to a great interception from Cook saw him race through to score under posts and Drinkwater Con 24 – 16.

With halftime approaching Pumas were gaining confidence and from Clark, walker and Bestford gained yards and from Marr pass, the on running Norman powered over for a deserved try on his debut. Drinkwater conn.

Half time 24-22.

Second half both teams started really positively showing heart, spirit and some great league skills. It wasn’t until 10 mins into the second half saw the next try. From Marr great pass Bestford saw a gap in the Demons defence and powered over. 24-26.

Pumas then went further when Norman, Drinkwater Bestford went up the field, Walton made a great tackle on Brown from a quick play from Kitching, Marr, Coxon passing set up Cook to go over, Drinkwater con 24 – 32.

Demons never gave up and Belsey wells and Beilby got Demons right on Pumas try line. On the fifth demons shipped it, ball bounced off Cartridge and Hitchins went over, ref said it went back to 0 tackle and awarded the try coates missed 28-32.

The end of the game was getting really tense with both teams going for the win; despite some really good tackling from Demons they couldn’t stop Clark going over for the winning try.

Full Time Durham Demons 28 – 36 Peterlee Pumas

Demons coach Karl Stephenson said “It was a tough start to the season, Peterlee had a lot of strong runners and defensively we didn’t cope with that. We need to work on that for our next match.”

Pumas Coach John Steel said “We knew this was going to be a tough game and against a good Demons team, we we’re disappointed with the tries we conceded but full credit to our lads we stuck at, played some very good rugby. We’ve got Owen Gill and Jas Dhami coming back and with the under 13s coming through as well, future looking really bright for our club”
